It was a set up from the start and I walked right into it.
We arrived at our client’s house, had our happy greeting inside the front door and then headed upstairs to her bedroom for our closet appointment. There on the bed next to the night table (which was filled with snacks and drinks as usual) was a white machine thingy.
“Oh, what’s this?” Erin said.
Our client said, “Oh, you haven’t seen one of these before?” I was curious about it myself.
“It takes pills off your sweaters,” she said. “It uses batteries or you can plug it into a socket and use it that way.”
“Show us,” Erin said. Our client just happened to have a cashmere sweater right there on her bed, like she’d just been using it on the sweater and hadn’t put it away yet. I know, you already see what’s coming but I didn’t.
Erin got her phone out to take a picture of it. “I want to check this out!” she said.
“I’ll be right back,” our client said. It seemed curious but maybe the oven was on downstairs.
She was back in a flash with two identically wrapped gifts.
“Happy Birthday,” she said to me. “And here’s a party favor for you, Erin.”
We opened up our gifts and guess what was inside? The white thingy!
Our client explained, “I thought I’d just have it laying on the bed and if you said something about it like you already knew what it was I wouldn’t have done anything. But since you said you hadn’t seen one before, I was prepared to go get the gifts for you.”
What a ploy!
I’d seen electric shavers on Amazon.com every time I went to order my cashmere combs. It would be right next to them. Being a low-tech person, I was suspicious and never bought one. She told us that she got the idea when she went to her dry cleaners and they were using one there. She got one, tested it, liked it, and bought two of them and gift wrapped them…just in case.
Pretty darn sweet!
I knew just the sweater I was going to try it out on when I got home. It was heading to the cleaners and I’d planned to ask them to de-pill it for me while they were at it.
I pulled the machine out of the box, plugged it in and went to town on my gray sweater.
It was so fun! You just run the blade over the fuzzy parts and it cuts them off and sends them into the canister.
Now I plan to bring it with me to closet appointments. I’ve always carried cashmere combs with me and de-pilled sweaters during an appointment if need be. But now I’m going to whip out my frothy white fabric shaver and be all high tech!
Clients. They just do the darndest things!
