The coolest thing happened today. One of my clients was expecting her first grandchild on December 26th. This morning I texted her. “Are you a grandparent yet?” I said.
My phone dinged a few minutes later and there was a picture of the cutest baby wearing a knitted red hat with a white pom pom at the tip. Attached at the top was a little banner that said, “My First Christmas.” Turns out she arrived early, December 20th, and enjoyed her first Christmas with her extended family. We had just visited that client a week before the birth. We were helping her by putting together outfits for all the holiday parties and festivities.
This client came to me when her youngest daughter went off to college. She wanted to figure out who she was now that she wasn’t 100% focused on family. Over the course of the years, we’ve helped her with other important events as well: the weddings of all three of her daughters, showers, parties, trips, holidays and social gatherings with friends.
Now her three daughters, all five years apart, are having babies at the same time. By April, she’ll have three grandchildren. Isn’t that amazing?
So this year, when I make my “Shining Moments” list, the gender party outfit for Baby Brooklyn is on that list. I can still see it in my mind!
Other moments I have captured include:
Getting a client into sneakers. She was scared at first and then she loved them!
Finding the perfect wedding gown for a client. That was followed up with the proper undergarments, shoes, hair ornaments, earrings, necklace, the borrowed and the blue. And then attending her wedding. Now, this client is pregnant and we’re shopping for her maternity outfits. The beat goes on.
Dressing a client for a book signing event when a book she wrote about art and homes was published by Assouline.
Dressing another author who was meeting with the press in New York to discuss her academic book on long-term relationships. I’m so proud of her!
Getting a client into a pair of glasses that she exclaimed, “I’d never have even seen these on the shelf!”
Helping a couple of husbands find just the right gift for their wives this year. And even before December 24th!
As I keep adding to my list of shining moments, I can easily pick out a theme. It’s is the sense of being part of families. This is intimate work. We learn a lot about our clients. They tell us the good and the bad, don’t they? All the while I’m there in the background solving problems, making things better, creating ease for people. I’m happy getting everything ready so they can participate fully in all the activities they take part in.
I’ve watched Downton Abbey and could easily see myself in the role of a domestic servant. I’d be there picking out clothes, pressing clothes, mending, sewing on buttons, hanging things up at the end of the day, packing for fanfares in London. And I’d love every minute of it. How exquisite that I’m invited to clients’ homes to do many of these same things. It’s a pleasure and an honor to tend to wardrobes and hear about the events after the fact.
My shining moments are the client’s shining moments too. Now that’s a win/win.
I hope you enjoyed your time with clients this year. I know you’ll be there for them next year too!
Do you think you’d have a minute to reflect on the ways you changed people’s lives this year?
