One of the best parts of the Monthly Marketing Bundle program is our once-a-month strategy call where members on the call share their successes, brainstorm, get advice from each other and enjoy the company of like-minded image consultants who are growing their businesses.
One of the members commented recently that she was going to use these weeks of summer to ponder new directions for her business.
We can take any time of the year to redesign our business or reinvent our way of doing business but the summer is as good a time as any to reflect, reinvent, and renew.
I’ve made tweaks and changes to my business countless times. I’ve never regretted taking time out to stop and be reflective and open to changing courses. I think every business person needs to take time to “refresh” and reassess where one is and where one would like to be.
One summer I decided I’d refresh myself by taking a writing workshop with author, Anne Lamott. I was sending my kids off to fun summer camps and I was pretty envious of them. I was in a rut and needed a camp experience of my own. I found it in that one-week workshop. By the end of the week, on Anne’s advice, several of us formed a writing group to continue giving and receiving support for each other as writers.
It was a course-changer. For years we met once a month and I had to bring some writing to share with the group. Members critiqued each other’s work and provided encouragement. Without that group, I’d never have become a published author. I learned the discipline of writing every day and the joy (and patience) of taking a rough piece of writing and polishing it. Looking back on that summer, I can see how vital that workshop was for me.
Other ways I’ve refreshed my career is to take time out to ask and answer questions like the following:
- What am I doing that I love doing and how can I do more of that?
- Are there some products out there that I’d like to incorporate which would add to my bottom line?
- Are there some educational courses I’d like to take?
- Are there subjects I’d like to research and be more of an authority on?
- Could I do what I’m doing but in a better way? Change my hours? Create a research and development day? Take Friday afternoons off?
- Is there a special project I’d like to take on? Write an e-book? Co-teach a course with a colleague?
- Are there clients I need to let go of in order to open the door to clients that are a better fit for me?
Is your business in need of some reinventing? Subtle changes can make a huge difference. Right now I’m working on taking Friday afternoons off. When I’ve been successful, it’s created so much space in my brain and ease in starting my weekend. It’s a personal scheduling adjustment that is making a big difference.
I’m passionate about helping people who have chosen to be in this business stay in this business. To keep a business healthy, it’s good to reflect and dream so you can renew the passion that brought you into this profession. There may be a door that’s opened a crack and if you open it further, you just might be staring at a new version of your business that simply delights you.
How do you refresh? Maybe you have some ideas to share about what’s worked well for you. Will you share those ideas right here on ETC’s Facebook page? Maybe you have a book title to share, a favorite retreat spot, a class you enjoyed. Let’s share what renews us!
