Are you looking for new clients? Do you want to find a way to work with a new type of client? Has someone asked you to create a workshop on a specific topic and you need to promote marketing copy to the sponsors? It’s time to sit down at the computer and start writing the marketing pieces that will speak to your audience.
It’s not always easy to get started. Sometimes when we sit down to create a marketing piece, our mind goes blank. It can seem overwhelming.
I still need to be reminded to focus on pain points
Last week I started putting together marketing copy for a promotion for the Monthly Marketing Bundle program which will happen at the end of the month. I picked a neutral person to read what I’d written so far and she didn’t hold back. She said, “Brenda, where are the pain points? What’s hurting in my business that the MMBs would be the solution for? Tell me the problems I’m having before I even consider what your program has to offer.”
My goodness. How did I forget that part?! I write promotional copy every month to go with the speech outlines that Monthly Marketing Bundle members receive. I always start with the pain points. I also focus on three Ps in my style and closet training courses. I tell my students, “Listen for the pressure, pain, and problems.”
I do this with my one-on-one with clients. In my consulting business I’m listening for where the pressure, pain or problems are for my client. When a problem she’s been struggling with for years gets solved in the first 30 minutes of our appointment, guess who turns into a lifetime client? She does!
Focus on problems you solve
Sometimes I think we’re just so close to our businesses that we can’t quite find the jumping off place to start writing our marketing copy.
I wanted to give you a jumpstart if this is hard for you, too. So I sat down and thought about my clients and some of the problems they brought me to solve and I made a list. They’re all pain points.
Why you need to use them is pretty simple. Nobody I’ve ever met has just decided they feel like they want to work with me for the heck of it. Something’s really bothering them and they want to know if I can fix it. My years of being in business, any credentials or accolades I’ve earned are not ultimately as important as the fact that I’ve identified her problems and reassured her that I can solve them.
So here’s that list of problems that you can use them as you get ready to create marketing copy for your newsletters, workshop proposals or social media posts. Remind your potential clients of all the things that are uncomfortable, but fixable with your skills, so they hire you!
Twelve reasons clients need you
Here are problems clients share that we can’t wait to solve.
The hardest part of my day is trying to decide what to wear. If I don’t get it right I could be uncomfortable all day.
I wonder if I’m dressing too young for my age. I worry that people aren’t taking me seriously enough. I don’t want someone talking about my appearance behind my back.
My outfit could be distracting my leadership team when what I really what is to have them focused on me, not my outfit.
I’m tired of buying stuff that I never wear.
I have an embarrassing amount of clothes but I can’t put a single outfit together.
I want to have a dating life but I have no date wardrobe.
I want to feel confident in my outfits but I’m always second-guessing myself.
I’ve lost weight and I don’t know how to dress myself anymore.
When I have to dress for a special event I don’t know how to pull together the full ensemble.
Style is not my strong suit. I’m living my dream job. My family life is full and rich. I’m totally comfortable in my own skin, but I have no idea about how to dress my body.
My husband promised to take care of me and now, after an acrimonious divorce, I have to find work again. I’ve been in a time warp. I have one idea where to start.
My career path has changed. Instead of wearing suits and carrying a briefcase, I’m now in the tech industry and everyone is in hoodies. How do I dress and get respect wearing casual clothes?
Does this list inspire you to sit down and write marketing copy? Seize the moment!
