Our clients have activities that come up in their life that they need outfits for, activities that are different from ours. Last week we had a really fun time making an outfit for a client to wear to host a gender reveal party. Her daughter is pregnant and awaiting the news of the sex of the baby. Invites have been sent out. They’ll learn the sex of the baby just two days before the party. There will be cake! When the cake gets cut, the color inside will be either pink or blue. Exciting stuff!
And what’s the dress code for the party? “Wear either pink or blue.”
Our client said, “My husband is planning on wearing a blue shirt. That’s easy. But I don’t know what to wear.” Since she was the hostess she wanted to look nice even though it was going to be a fairly casual event.
I thought about what was in her closet. Her pink and blue tops weren’t that exciting and they weren’t the shades I’d have preferred her to wear. Her blues were navy blue. Her pinks were more of a blush color. The party was coming right up; there wasn’t going to be time to shop for the right shade.
“Let me see your jewelry,” I said. Her husband likes to purchase jewelry for her on his travels. Two rings jumped out at me. One was a pink sapphire and other one was blue topaz. We had our inspiration! “Put these on your fingers, would you?” I said.
I ended up dressing her in a column of white: her groovy white jeans that we picked up this summer and a gorgeous white Jil Sander blouse with soft pleating all around it that we’d purchased about eight years ago. (She takes really good care of her clothes; the blouse is still pristine!) On her feet I suggested she wear her Stuart Weitzman clear jellies we purchased last year that are full of light-colored sparkly stones across her toes. You look at those shoes and they twinkle, just like they’re winking at you. You can’t keep yourself from smiling. Now, that is definitely the mood I was going for!
I added her flat Rebecca Minkoff silver clutch that we got for her at Nordstrom this summer. She needed a bag that could go out in the evening and make casual outfits look snazzy. It was the perfect bag to accompany this twinkly minimalist outfit.
She was delighted! Not only would her husband enjoy seeing her wear the rings he bought for her but this outfit brings out our client’s quirky, delightful sense of humor. She’s going to be the belle of the gender ball.
Now I can’t wait to hear the news!
